Manteno Asylum

Manteno, Illinois

The 55th Illinois General Assembly authorized the facility in 1927. Manteno was a state hospital that opened in December of 1930, the population of patients peaked to 8,195 in 1954. 1983 then governor James R. Thompson authorized the closure of Manteno Asylum and the hospital closed in 1985. The Illinois Veterans Hospital was dedicated in October 1986 and still operates today on a portion of the grounds that the original psychiatric occupied.

Numerous other buildings on the grounds have been renovated as of July 2009, while some of the other buildings have been demolished. The Morgan cottage and sewer plant are still there but left abandoned, but are in their original condition. The site was redeveloped to include a VA home, Industrial park and the Mantemo Municipal Golf Course. Numerous housing developments occupy the grounds.

Between 2008 and 2010 The Illinois Ghost Society investigated one of the abandoned buildings 5 times. The pictures on this page are of the building we did our investigations. It has been demolished and the Indian Oaks Academy, a residential treatment center for males and females age 12 - 21 is now on the site. Across the road East of the grounds is the location of the hospital cemetery. During our 5 visits we were not disappointed, we had some sort of encounters that convinced us that the site was haunted. You can see on some of the photos what we captured while, at the time we saw nothing.

On one of our visits we were doing an EVP session while standing still against the walls, when we heard a distant rumbling in the ceiling down one of the halls and got louder as it approached the dormitory we were at. It sounded like someone rolling 55 gallon drums across the ceiling only there are large holes making it impossible for anyone to be up there. On other visits we heard metal doors opening and closing, the sound of keys tinkling and the long silent intercom was what sounded like static and in the picture to the right we saw in the corner what appeared to be a dark figure that suddenly vanished.

On our last visit to this building there were four of us. We were there for a few hours hearing all kind of sounds, at one point we thought we actually heard what appeared to be a muffled conversation between a few people. We went outside and found the entrance to one of the tunnels under the facility. We got a few misty pictures and decided to leave due to the fact there was asbestos there. Back in the dormitory room we were doing an EVP session, I didn't feel well nausea, headache and dizziness. I suggested we leave, once outside the building I felt fine. I didn't say anything when one member asked if anyone felt sick in the building, it turned out everyone felt the samething.

After our last visit there we never returned. I found out that the building had been demolished. I wonder if they experience activity at Indian Oaks Academy.
